Omer Mayer, the 19-year-old Israeli guard for Purdue University, is preparing for a pivotal 2026/27 basketball season with hopes of securing a guaranteed NBA prospect status ahead of the 2027 draft. Having adapted to American college basketball and with key teammates having left, Mayer is expected to take on a significantly larger role this year. Purdue's respected coach Matt Painter highlighted Mayer's potential in a recent podcast, stating, "Omer has a very good chance to make a big leap this season. We can play with three point guards simultaneously, and we have a physical backcourt." American media praised Mayer's shooting ability, noting his excellent mid-range shot and ball handling, and predicted that the backcourt pairing of Mayer and CJ Cox will be one of the most underrated in the Big Ten Conference.

Purdue was ranked 25th in the NCAA power rankings by prominent college analyst John Rothstein, who also projected Mayer to be the starting point guard for the Boilermakers. Last season, Purdue was a favorite alongside Houston, winning the Big Ten tournament but falling in the NCAA quarterfinals to Arizona.
