Limor Livnat Ordered to Pay $27,000 in Defamation Lawsuit
Former minister Limor Livnat has been ordered to pay approximately NIS 98,500 (around $27,000 USD) in damages and legal fees following a defamation lawsuit filed by Minister David Amsalem. The lawsuit, which began in 2020, centered on statements Livnat made in media interviews and in a book she published about alleged actions by Amsalem approximately 20 years ago.
Livnat had claimed that Amsalem attempted to promote associates for appointments and, after she refused, worked against her politically. Amsalem denied these allegations, calling them false publications that damaged his reputation. The court ruled against Livnat, rejecting her defense of "truth in publication" and determining that her statements constituted libel.
The court awarded Amsalem NIS 85,000 in compensation and NIS 13,500 for legal expenses. Additionally, the ruling mandates that if Livnat's book is reprinted, the passages concerning Amsalem must be removed.
In response to the verdict, Amsalem stated that the fight was not about money but about truth and reputation, expressing satisfaction that the court upheld justice against what he called fabricated stories.
