Wounded Combatant Recovers from October 7 Injuries to Earn Criminology Degree

Sergeant Major Shaliv Bast, who was severely wounded fighting Hamas terrorists on October 7, has graduated with a bachelor's degree in criminology from Ashkelon Academic College. Bast, a Negev Border Police team commander, sustained serious injuries to his back and leg during an encounter with terrorists in Ofakim. He underwent six surgeries and spent nearly six months hospitalized, with an additional surgery recently. He continues rehabilitation at Ichilov Hospital while serving in the police force.

Bast had enrolled in the criminology program just two weeks before the October 7 attack. Despite his severe injuries and the long road to recovery, he was determined to fulfill his dream of completing his degree. He persevered through pain, treatments, and doubts, studying diligently and even attending summer semesters. He credited the college and its staff for their support throughout his journey, specifically mentioning Hagit Bukovza for her daily contact and guidance.

The Ashkelon Academic College highlighted Bast's story as a symbol of perseverance and resilience. College President Prof. Elyakim Rubinstein praised Bast, stating, "The college is very proud of Shaliv, the fighter who was wounded in the difficult battle in Ofakim, for his ability to cope with the challenges of his injury and the victory of his strong spirit. He is an example to us all." Bast was supported at the graduation ceremony by his wife, children, parents, and sisters.

Bast's journey from the battlefield to the graduation stage represents a personal victory over immense physical and emotional challenges, demonstrating a remarkable spirit of determination.
