Critically Wounded Officer Completes Degree While Hospitalized
Sergeant Major Shaliv Bast, a Yasam (Special Patrol Unit) officer, has successfully completed his bachelor's degree in Criminology, achieving his academic goal despite severe injuries sustained during the October 7th Hamas attack. Bast, who enrolled in the program just two weeks before the attack, was critically wounded in the battle against terrorists who infiltrated Ofakim. He underwent six surgeries and a prolonged hospitalization where his life was fought for.
Despite his condition, Bast remained determined to finish his studies. He participated in classes via Zoom and continued his coursework through the summer semester. He received his degree certificate at a ceremony held by the Ashkelon Academic College. "They didn't believe I would succeed," Bast recounted, describing how he studied while on medication, with the computer on his stomach, listening to lectures late into the night and utilizing tutoring services.
Bast, a resident of Beersheba and commander of a Yasam Negev police team, was injured in the back and leg during the confrontation. He was hospitalized at Soroka Medical Center for several months. After another surgery about a month ago, he has returned to service with Yasam while continuing his rehabilitation. He credits his family, friends, and colleagues for their unwavering support, which bolstered him when he struggled to believe in himself.
Bast emphasized the therapeutic role of his studies, providing him with structure, purpose, and routine beyond personal development. He expressed gratitude to the Ashkelon Academic College and its staff, particularly administrative manager Hagith Bukobza, for their crucial support. He now encourages other wounded soldiers not to abandon their dreams, stating that education and personal growth can provide strength and meaning during rehabilitation, reminding them that an injury is only a part of their story.
The Ashkelon Academic College highlighted Bast's achievement as an exceptional example of perseverance. College President Prof. Elyakim Rubinstein praised Bast's resilience and strong spirit, wishing him success in his return to police service.
