Ex-Soccer Player Yaakov Buzaglo Sparks Controversy With Remarks on Ethnic Socioeconomic Gaps

Former Israeli soccer player Yaakov Buzaglo has ignited controversy following recent statements made on "The Guy Peleg Podcast," produced by All In podcast network. Buzaglo, who recently returned from Georgia with his wife, Hani, and expressed support for the "Democrats" party, addressed the socioeconomic disparities between Mizrahi and Ashkenazi Jews in Israel.

Buzaglo asserted that the root of these differences lies in home education, not discrimination. "When I checked everything, it all connected. No deprivation, no nothing. I know people, even today, who can't read or write. Can you demand they be professors or pilots? I'm sorry. Everything starts with home education and everything starts with schooling," he stated. He acknowledged that many from Mizrahi backgrounds have advanced significantly in recent times.

Expanding on the educational gap, Buzaglo drew a stark comparison between the two groups' priorities historically. "When I check today where we stand compared to Ashkenazim, I have all the conclusions but no one asks me so I don't put it out there. There was a huge gap in education between the Mizrahim and the Ashkenazim. The Ashkenazim bought books and paid for universities, the Mizrahim bought more food and filled their bellies," he explained. He suggested that these differing priorities, focusing on sustenance over learning, ultimately led to long-term consequences and contributed to current resentments.
