Basij Commander Killed in Mysterious Operation Inside Iran

Iran has announced the killing of Basij commander Abdolraouf Ismaqi within its own territory. The incident, described by the local Tasnim news agency as a "terrorist act," occurred in a city in southeastern Iran. Further details are expected to be released later.

This assassination follows less than two weeks after the regime announced an update to the Basij's role and structure in response to evolving demands during the recent conflict. The Basij, an organization established in the early years of the Islamic Revolution over four decades ago, serves as a core social support for the militia. Its members are employed in most state institutions, granting it a significant presence across various ministries and agencies.

While most Basij members are unarmed volunteers, some bases are equipped with military gear and maintain an armed force. The previous Basij commander, Gholamreza Soleimani, was killed in an IDF strike during Operation "Sledgehammer of the Lion."

Last month, Iran revamped the Basij's role and capabilities to meet changing security needs. Conservative cleric Hossein Taeb, 69, a veteran security figure, was appointed to manage the organization and oversee its redefinition.
