Iran Appoints Hossein Taeb as Basij Commander After Intelligence Failures Against Israel

Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei announced the appointment of Hossein Taeb as the new commander of the Basij, the paramilitary volunteer force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Taeb, a close associate of Khamenei, previously led the Basij and served as head of the IRGC's intelligence organization for over a decade. His previous tenure ended amid a series of significant operational failures against Israel, including multiple assassinations of Iranian figures and unsuccessful attempts to carry out attacks on Israelis abroad.

Taeb's return to a senior role marks a strategic shift in Iran's internal security and intelligence approach. Khamenei's directive emphasizes strengthening the "popular intelligence network," enhancing training, and increasing the use of new technologies to develop a people-based response to enemy threats. The Basij's traditional role as a mass mobilization and reserve force is now expected to expand into a more integrated intelligence and security apparatus that deeply penetrates neighborhoods, universities, workplaces, and social groups.

Taeb, born in Tehran in 1963, joined the IRGC in 1982 and has held various intelligence and counterintelligence roles. He was Basij commander during the 2009 post-election protests, where the force played a key role in suppressing demonstrations. Afterward, he led the IRGC intelligence until summer 2022, when he stepped down following a wave of Israeli assassinations targeting Iranian officials and nuclear scientists.

Analysts in Iran interpret Taeb's appointment as an effort to decentralize intelligence operations, linking grassroots Basij networks with official security bodies to address vulnerabilities exposed during recent conflicts. This approach aligns with the longstanding ideology promoted by the Islamic Republic's founder, Ayatollah Khomeini, advocating for ordinary citizens' involvement in national defense and intelligence gathering.

Taeb replaces Gholamreza Soleimani, who was killed in the recent war. His new mandate includes expanding Basij activities socially and internationally, promoting the "popular resistance" model beyond Iran's borders. The move signals Tehran's intent to reinforce its internal security amid ongoing tensions with Israel and regional instability.
