Iran Appoints Hossein Taeb as Basij Commander After Intelligence Failures Against Israel

Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has appointed Hossein Taeb as the new commander of the Basij, the paramilitary volunteer force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Taeb, a close associate of Khamenei, previously led the Basij and served as head of the IRGC's intelligence organization for over a decade. His prior tenure ended amid a series of significant operational failures against Israel, including multiple assassinations of Iranian figures and unsuccessful attempts to carry out attacks on Israelis abroad, notably in Turkey.

Taeb's return to this senior role follows the death of his predecessor, Gholamreza Soleimani, in the recent conflict. His new mandate, as outlined by Khamenei, extends beyond traditional Basij duties to strengthening "popular intelligence networks," enhancing training, and integrating new technologies to develop a "people-based" response to enemy threats. The order emphasizes expanding Basij activities within various social groups, neighborhoods, and mosques, aiming to create a more decentralized and deeply embedded intelligence and security system within Iranian society.

Born in Tehran in 1963, Taeb joined the IRGC in 1982 and has held key positions in intelligence and counter-espionage. Analysts interpret his appointment as a strategic move to address Iran's recent intelligence vulnerabilities by linking grassroots Basij networks more closely with official security and intelligence bodies. This approach aligns with the longstanding vision of Iran's founder, Khomeini, advocating for civilian participation in national defense through widespread intelligence gathering.
