Hussein Taeb, a senior Iranian security official known for his ruthless reputation, is returning to a top position in Tehran after being dismissed four years ago. Taeb, 63, will resume his previous role as commander of the Basij militia, a vast network of regime loyalists embedded throughout Iranian society. Taeb was removed from his intelligence post in 2022 following a failed Iranian plot to attack Israeli targets in Istanbul, which was foiled by Turkish intelligence. Despite this setback, he maintained close ties with Mojtaba Khamenei and continued coordinating security matters.

In June 2025, false reports of Taeb's death briefly circulated in Iranian media but were quickly retracted. His reinstatement amid escalating economic and political crises highlights the regime's reliance on hardline loyalists to maintain control and counter internal opposition.
