Six Israelis Arrested in Cyprus for Cigarette Smuggling Operation

MaarivCenter
Translated & summarized from Maariv by baba
The story · English

Six Israeli citizens were apprehended in Cyprus over the past two days in connection with an attempt to smuggle tens of thousands of unmarked cigarettes. Customs officials at border crossings Agius Dometios and Derinia, located in the Turkish-controlled part of Cyprus, intercepted the individuals.

On Sunday, five Israelis were stopped in a taxi at Agius Dometios. A search revealed 49 cartons, each containing 200 cigarettes, which lacked required health warnings, security features, and tracking codes. The tobacco was confiscated for destruction. The individuals were arrested but later released after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement totaling 4,000 euros (approximately 14,000 shekels).

The following day, a 49-year-old Israeli woman was detained at the Derinia crossing. Ten cartons of unmarked cigarettes were discovered in her luggage. She was released after agreeing to pay a 600 euro (approximately 2,100 shekels) settlement to resolve the case.
