Chabad Launches Expanded Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program at Western Wall
Chabad's successful "Shevet 13" Bar and Bat Mitzvah program is undergoing a significant expansion and upgrade, aiming to reach thousands of Jewish youths across Israel. The national rollout was marked by a special launch event for emissaries held at the Western Wall Plaza and its tunnels.
The program's centerpiece is the establishment of dozens of new Bar Mitzvah clubs nationwide, alongside a comprehensive upgrade of existing clubs. These enhancements include deeper educational content and expanded activities. A parallel, dedicated program for Bat Mitzvah girls will also be broadened, featuring tailored lessons and gatherings.
A key component of "Shevet 13" is an immersive experience in Jerusalem, serving as the culmination of the educational process. This resource-intensive journey is designed to create a meaningful experience for the Bar Mitzvah celebrant and their families. Activities include content focused on connecting with Jerusalem, a Torah reading at the Western Wall, a tour of the Western Wall Tunnels, and a festive meal. This initiative is conducted in cooperation with the Western Wall Heritage Foundation and with the blessing of Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, Rabbi of the Western Wall and Holy Sites. The entire program, including transportation to Jerusalem, is provided free of charge to families.
The project, managed by the youth wing of Agudat Chabad, also includes preparation courses for the Torah reading, engaging activities for boys, personalized guidance for the first Torah reading and Bar Mitzvah speech, and a "Shabbat Chatan" (groom's Shabbat). The launch event featured tours of the Western Wall excavations and new exhibits, followed by a celebratory meal where program leaders outlined the vision and strategy.
Member of Knesset Rabbi Meir Porush, who assists in securing significant funding through the Ministry for Jerusalem Affairs and Tradition, announced an increase in support and budget for the emissaries' activities related to this program. He emphasized the program's expansion to reach thousands more children, strengthening tradition and the connection to Jerusalem. The Chairman of the youth wing, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Ahronov, presented Rabbi Porush with an award, stating the goal is to enable thousands of youths annually to celebrate this important milestone meaningfully and without financial burden.
