52 Boys From Anoushei Mashhad Community Celebrate Bar Mitzvah at Western Wall in Jerusalem
This week, approximately 1,000 members of the Anoushei Mashhad community traveled from New York to Israel to celebrate the bar mitzvahs of 52 boys in a moving ceremony at the Western Wall plaza in Jerusalem. The event was organized and overseen by Rabbi Shlomo Zabihi, the community's rabbi in Israel and head of the Tiferet Rafael institutions. Each year, dozens of bar mitzvah boys and their families make special flights from New York to mark their entry into Torah and mitzvot near the remnants of the Holy Temple.
After a pause last year due to the war with Iran, this year saw an increased number of participants. Rabbi Zabihi greeted the guests upon arrival at Ben Gurion Airport and accompanied them throughout their stay to strengthen their connection to the Holy Land and their heritage. During the ceremony, the boys received tallit and tefillin bags, and their fathers and community elders helped them don the tefillin according to tradition. A highlight was the spreading of a large, ornate tallit over all the boys together. The community's kohanim blessed the boys, and Rabbi Zabihi blew the shofar, inspiring the crowd with a powerful acceptance of divine sovereignty.
Each boy was gifted a deluxe "Tiferet Rafael" prayer book, leather-bound with gold embossing and personalized dedication, along with a certificate signed by Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch, the Rabbi of the Western Wall and holy sites. Rabbi Zabihi referenced Psalms, emphasizing the significance of the boys' ability to pray openly at the Temple's remains, contrasting with their ancestors who prayed in secret for 120 years.
During their visit, the community also toured other holy sites, including ancient synagogues and graves of righteous figures, and held a prayer day at the Cave of the Patriarchs under Border Police escort. Rabbi Rafael Zabihi, CEO of Tiferet Rafael, noted the importance of organizing this annual event and the special increase in attendance this year due to last year's travel restrictions.
Rabbi Zabihi, ordained and appointed by the late Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, shared the late Rabbi's deep affection for the community, which has historic ties to Jerusalem's Bukharan neighborhood and the Porat Yosef Yeshiva. Today, the community continues to be supported by Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, the current Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Israel. The Anoushei Mashhad community is known for its rich traditions, maintaining strong religious observance and avoiding assimilation. Their annual bar mitzvah celebrations at the Western Wall reinforce the younger generation's bond to the Land of Israel and their ancestral heritage.
