Ofer Winter Rejects Blanket Haredi Draft Exemption, Cites Contribution

Ofer Winter, chairman of the "Am Israel" party and a retired brigadier general, has sharply criticized the demand for a blanket military service exemption for all yeshiva students, as proposed by MK Yitzhak Goldknopf of the Agudat Yisrael party. Winter stated that Agudat Yisrael's demands are deceptive and that no government will be formed without addressing the status of those who serve.

Winter asserted that not everyone dressed in black and white is a Torah scholar, arguing that the current system harms genuine Torah students. He proposed a system where Haredim would integrate into the IDF and national service, with benefits tied to contribution and service duration. Those who do not serve, study, or contribute would not receive benefits.

Despite his strong tone, Winter's current stance appears to be a slight softening from previous remarks. Last week, he hinted that Torah scholars would receive an exemption. He had previously pledged to integrate the Haredi public into the IDF without compromise or delay.
