UK to Impose New Sanctions on Israeli Settlements
The United Kingdom is expected to announce a significant toughening of its policy towards Israel, including a ban on trade in goods and some services related to West Bank settlements. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband is set to present the move as part of a broad reset of UK-Israel relations.
The proposed ban will reportedly extend beyond products manufactured in settlements to include certain services, such as financing and advertising connected to them. Implementing the ban on goods may require new legislation in the British Parliament.
Previously, products from settlements did not receive preferential customs treatment granted to goods from Israel, and Britain had advised businesses to avoid economic activity in settlements. This new initiative aims to transform such advice into a legal prohibition.
The policy shift is partly attributed to Israel's E1 settlement plan east of Jerusalem and an alleged increase in settler violence in the West Bank.
