Pro-Iran Analyst's Remarks Spark Controversy, Prompt Embassy Clarification

A controversial statement by pro-Iranian analyst Mehdi Douloul, declaring "the South is finished" regarding the situation in southern Lebanon, has ignited a firestorm in the country. Douloul, speaking on Lebanese channel Al-Jadeed, also questioned Iran's ability to provide support, stating, "You prevent me from bringing in weapons and money. How am I supposed to support?" He further elaborated that Iran sells "illusions" to people and that the Lebanese army lacks military equipment, dismissing the recent release of five Lebanese prisoners as an "Israeli bait."

The remarks drew significant criticism, compelling the Iranian Embassy in Beirut to issue a rare clarification on Sunday. The embassy distanced itself from Douloul's comments, emphasizing that they represent only his personal opinions and do not reflect the official stance of Tehran or its diplomatic mission. "Iran's positions and those of its embassy are expressed only through official bodies and authorized representatives," the statement read.

Douloul's comments about the "Israeli bait" likely refer to the recent release of five Lebanese prisoners, an operation clarified by the Prime Minister's office as part of negotiations with Lebanon, with Prime Minister Netanyahu also directing efforts to locate and return the bodies of Lebanese Jewish community leaders.
