Iran Uses Lebanon to Strengthen Position in Negotiations, Source Says
A diplomatic source told the Lebanese newspaper Nidaa Al-Watan on June 26, 2026, that Iran views Lebanon as a bargaining chip in its negotiations, using the country to bolster its leverage without regard for Lebanese sovereignty or interests. After leveraging the Strait of Hormuz, Tehran has added Lebanon to its strategic cards, aiming to maintain influence over southern Lebanon through Hezbollah. The source claimed Iran benefits from the ongoing Israeli occupation of parts of southern Lebanon, even if it prolongs the suffering of the Lebanese people.
The source emphasized that the quickest path to Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon and the return of displaced residents lies in Lebanese-Israeli negotiations, not through Islamabad. Iran’s attempts to portray Lebanon as its top priority in talks are described as deceptive, intended to exploit the "resistance camp" and align it with Iranian interests. This policy is expected to worsen the situation in southern Lebanon, as Iran is unlikely to support the Lebanese army’s deployment there and will instead encourage Hezbollah to undermine it rather than cooperate.
The report follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s press conference after signing an agreement with Lebanon, highlighting the complex regional dynamics involving Iran, Hezbollah, Israel, and Lebanon’s sovereignty.
