An Israeli security source told the Saudi outlet Al-Arabiya on Monday that several senior Iranian officers are operating in the Mount Taher area of southern Lebanon, where they hold key roles in directing fighting and coordinating operational activity. The report said their presence has made the area especially important for Iran in recent weeks.
According to the same account, one of the main reasons Iran pressed to halt the ground operation in that sector was concern for the officers’ safety, along with fears that Israeli forces might reach them or arrest some of them if their advance continued on the ground.
Separately, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said earlier Monday, after talks in Switzerland ended, that one result of the discussions was an announcement on creating a mechanism to monitor implementation of the memorandum of understanding, including the cessation of fighting in Lebanon. He said, “It was agreed to establish technical working teams to implement the memorandum of understanding. The technical delegations from both sides will continue their work starting tomorrow.”
