Pro-Iranian Analyst's Remarks Spark Controversy, Prompt Embassy Clarification

A controversial statement by pro-Iranian analyst Mehdi Doulat, declaring "the South is finished" regarding the situation in Lebanon, has caused a stir in the country. Doulat, interviewed on Lebanese channel Al-Jadeed, also questioned Iran's support, stating, "You prevent me from bringing in weapons and money. How am I supposed to support?"

The remarks drew significant criticism, leading the Iranian Embassy in Beirut to issue a rare clarification on Sunday. The embassy stated that Doulat's comments were his personal opinions and did not represent the official stance of Tehran or the embassy. They emphasized that Iran's official positions are communicated only through authorized representatives.

Doulat further elaborated on his views, suggesting that Iran sells "illusions" to people and that the situation in southern Lebanon is dire. He contrasted Lebanon's situation with that of Iraq, which shares a border with Iran, implying greater potential for support if circumstances were different. He also dismissed the recent release of five Lebanese prisoners by Israel as an "Israeli bait" and not a significant achievement for the Lebanese military, which he claimed lacks military equipment.

The Israeli Prime Minister's office clarified that the prisoner release was part of negotiations with Lebanon and that Prime Minister Netanyahu had instructed efforts to locate and return the bodies of Lebanese Jewish community leaders.
