Agudat Yisrael Considers Replacing Knesset Member Israel Eichler

Agudat Yisrael, a faction within the United Torah Judaism party, is reportedly considering a significant change in its Knesset representation, potentially replacing incumbent Member of Knesset Israel Eichler. Eichler, who has served in the Knesset and government almost continuously since 2003 as the representative of the Belz Hasidic dynasty, is currently the Deputy Minister of Communications. Sources indicate that the Rebbe of Belz is weighing a proposal to appoint Elikim Stark, a prominent figure within the Hasidic community, to replace Eichler on the party's Knesset list.

Eichler's supporters are reportedly working to prevent this change, and the Rebbe's decision is expected imminently. This potential shift follows recent upheavals within the Degel HaTorah faction of United Torah Judaism, which saw the departure of its long-time chairman Moshe Gafni and prominent MK Uri Maklev.

The United Torah Judaism list for the upcoming Knesset elections is expected to comprise six representatives from Degel HaTorah and four from Agudat Yisrael. MK Yaakov Asher is slated to head the list, replacing Gafni, followed by Yitzchak Goldknopf and Yitzchak Pindrus. Meir Porush and Moshe Rosenthal are also expected to be high on the list. The sixth position is contested between Eichler and Stark. The remaining spots are allocated to Yehuda Weissfish, Yaakov Tessler, Dudi Zaltz, and another Degel HaTorah representative.

MK Asher, considered close to Rabbi Dov Lando, the current spiritual leader of the Lithuanian Haredi public, is expected to lead the party's list. Asher previously left his government positions in protest of the lack of arrangement for yeshiva students' exemption from military service. He has been a staunch advocate for the status of yeshiva students, particularly within the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, and was instrumental in advancing legislation related to the issue.
