Israeli Athletes Secure Three Golds at World Obstacle Racing Championships

Israeli athletes achieved significant success at the World Obstacle Racing Championships held in Beijing from September 2nd to 6th, securing three gold medals and one bronze in the elite categories. Gal Sharim, 21, claimed the world championship title in the 400-meter race with a time of 1 minute 20.61 seconds. He was followed by American Luke Beckstrand, the reigning world champion, and fellow Israeli Shneor Sameach, 20, who finished third. Gal Sharim's twin brother, Shir Sharim, also competed in the event.

Two days later, Gal Sharim earned his second gold medal in the 100-meter race. In a dramatic finish, he overtook Beckstrand in the final obstacles, with both athletes recording identical times of 23.622 seconds. The organizers declared them joint winners. Mai Yaalom contributed another gold medal for Israel, winning the women's 100-meter final in 33.66 seconds, surpassing Poland's Katarzyna Jonczyk, the current world champion.

The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM), which oversees the championships, recognized the Israeli team's performance as one of the most notable outcomes of the event. The World Obstacle Racing Championships, sanctioned by the UIPM, feature races of 100 meters, 400 meters, 3 kilometers, and team competitions. Obstacle racing is now integrated into modern pentathlon, with the 100-meter obstacle course set to replace show jumping at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
