Former PM Bennett Defends Young Candidate Amid Political Criticism

Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has responded to criticism regarding the placement of Jonathan Shilo high on his Knesset list, particularly from political commentators like Amit Segal. In a detailed social media post, Bennett defended the young candidate, explaining the rationale behind his selection.

Bennett clarified that Shilo will be 24 on election day, not 21 as suggested, and highlighted his achievements, including founding Israel's largest organization for serving youth and blocking draft-dodging legislation in the Knesset. Bennett strongly criticized the current government's perceived neglect of young soldiers and reservists, contrasting their situation with the large number of young, healthy Haredim who are exempt from military service. He attributed this issue to a cabinet including figures he described as architects of draft-dodging and a minister who never served in the IDF, stating Shilo would be a voice for this generation.

Further emphasizing Shilo's qualifications, Bennett pointed to his military service as a Sergeant Major in the Maglan unit, where he commanded operations in Lebanon and Gaza, narrowly escaping death recently. He also noted Shilo's family legacy, being the grandson of Lieutenant Colonel Shaul Shilo, a Yom Kippur War hero. Bennett expressed pride in Shilo and his diverse team of executives, fighters, and performers, aiming to "fix Israel."
