Google Photos Integrates Gemini AI for Advanced Photo Management

Google is expanding the capabilities of its Gemini AI agent, Spark, by integrating it into Google Photos. This tool, initially showcased at Google I/O, is designed to perform complex tasks within Google services using natural language instructions. Now, it will gain access to users' photo and video libraries, enabling them to search, sort, extract information and text from images, and even perform editing tasks.

Spark can execute a sequence of actions for a single task, eliminating the need for users to perform each step individually. For instance, a user could ask Spark to find the 15 best photos from a trip, enhance them, add them to a new album, and then draft an email with a link to the album for trip participants. The AI can also be used for library cleanup and organization, identifying duplicate or similar photos, creating monthly albums, or gathering all receipt images from a specific period for tax return purposes.

Google is also enabling recurring tasks, allowing Spark to perform certain actions regularly to maintain an organized photo library over time. The company emphasizes that sensitive operations will have additional safeguards. Before editing a photo, Spark creates a copy, preserving the original. Furthermore, before sending emails or sharing albums, the system will request explicit user confirmation. New albums created by Spark will be private by default and require user approval before being shared.

Initially, Gemini Spark for Google Photos will be launched in the United States for subscribers of Gemini AI Pro and Ultra, and will be available only in English. Google has not yet announced when this feature will be expanded to other countries, including Israel.
