Apple iOS 27 to Introduce iPhone Handoff for Seamless Number Switching

Apple is set to integrate a new feature called "iPhone Handoff" into its upcoming iOS 27 operating system, allowing users to seamlessly switch between two iPhones using the same phone number and cellular subscription without needing to swap SIM cards or transfer eSIM profiles. This functionality enables users to designate one iPhone as the "Main Device" and another as a "Companion" device, with all calls, messages, and notifications syncing in real-time between them.

The feature, demonstrated in development environments like Xcode 27, aims to provide greater flexibility, particularly for users who own multiple iPhones. It is anticipated to coincide with the launch of Apple's first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Ultra, which is expected to be a high-end device. iPhone Handoff would allow users to leave their expensive foldable phone at home for certain activities, like sports or travel, and use a smaller, more durable iPhone instead, while still remaining connected with their primary number.

However, the activation of iPhone Handoff is not solely dependent on Apple; it requires explicit support from mobile carriers. System code has shown references to international carriers such as T-Mobile in the US and Telekom in Germany. The speed at which Israeli carriers will adopt this new protocol, which allows sharing a single cellular line across two smartphones without incurring duplicate data charges, remains uncertain.

This move by Apple extends its vision of continuous connectivity, building upon existing features that enable task switching between Macs, iPads, and Apple Watches. Introducing this capability between iPhones offers users maximum flexibility in managing their devices. iOS 27 is expected to be released to the public alongside the new iPhone series, offering a practical solution for the era of multiple smart devices.
