Israeli Police Deployed to Ukraine for Rosh Hashanah Security Mission

Israeli police officers have arrived in Uman, Ukraine, to bolster security during the upcoming Rosh Hashanah celebrations. The officers will work alongside their Ukrainian counterparts to maintain public order and safety in areas frequented by Hasidic pilgrims, particularly those visiting the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. The Israeli contingent is expected to remain in Uman until the conclusion of the holiday.

A coordination meeting between Israeli and Ukrainian officials established joint operational plans to ensure security for the expected 40,000 pilgrims. As of September 3rd, approximately 2,000 pilgrims had already arrived in Uman. The deployed Israeli officers are currently conducting joint patrols and engaging in outreach with pilgrims, accompanied by Ukrainian emergency services and National Guard personnel.

Ukrainian security forces have stated that the situation in Uman is stable and under control. Rosh Hashanah in 2026 will begin on the evening of September 11th and conclude on the evening of September 13th, marking the start of the Jewish year 5787.

The region of Cherkasy, where Uman is located, has been a frequent target of Russian attacks. Recent incidents include the destruction of nine Russian missiles and 16 drones over the region on July 30th, with debris causing fires near residential areas in the Uman district. Further attacks on August 31st and September 1st resulted in the destruction of three missiles and six drones, with damage reported to residential buildings, a kindergarten, a church, and other infrastructure.
