Top Hamas Security Chief Critically Wounded, Hospitalized in Israel

Muain al-Arabid, identified as the head of Hamas's internal security service, is in critical condition at an Israeli hospital after being captured in Gaza on September 1. Al-Arabid sustained a thigh wound during his apprehension and is currently on life support, according to reports citing journalist Itay Ilanai. Israeli authorities are reportedly working to save his life, recognizing his value as a source of intelligence.

The operation to capture al-Arabid on September 1 in the Al-Katiiba area of Gaza City involved Israeli special forces, including Shin Bet agents, who reportedly used a civilian minibus that had previously supplied a nearby stall. The operation faced complications when the Israeli team was discovered, leading to a firefight and Israeli airstrikes to cover their withdrawal. Video footage released by Al Jazeera and Israel's N12 purportedly shows the operation, with participants arriving in a civilian vehicle and engaging in a shootout.

Initially, there was confusion regarding who carried out the capture, with some reports suggesting anti-Hamas groups cooperating with Israel. However, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet later confirmed their special units conducted the raid. Al-Manassa, an Egyptian publication, reported that al-Arabid's wife, Maha al-Arabid, was killed during the operation, and several of their children were injured. Hamas's Interior Ministry officially acknowledged al-Arabid's capture, stating he was wounded during a firefight and that several Gaza residents were also killed or injured.

Israel considers al-Arabid a highly significant figure. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that al-Arabid was responsible for concealing and moving Israeli hostages, ensuring Hamas leadership's security, restoring the organization's capabilities, and planning attacks. Hamas's "Resistance Security" entity contested some of these claims, asserting al-Arabid's role was primarily focused on combating alleged Israeli agents and collaborators, not military tasks or hostage security.

The internal security apparatus al-Arabid headed evolved from the 1980s structure "Al-Majd," tasked with identifying Gazans suspected of collaborating with Israel. It has since become a crucial internal control mechanism for Hamas, handling counterintelligence, investigations, and combating alleged Israeli espionage. The capture occurred amidst a ceasefire, which Hamas condemned as a "clear and dangerous violation," urging mediators and the U.S. to pressure Israel. Israel maintains such operations are necessary to neutralize immediate threats and vows to continue pursuing Hamas leaders and Oct. 7 attackers.
