Israel Captures Hamas Security Chief in Gaza Operation

Israel's Shin Bet security agency and the IDF conducted a joint operation in Gaza City on September 1st to capture Muain Al-Arabid, a senior figure in Hamas's internal security apparatus. Al-Arabid was wounded during the operation and subsequently brought to Israel for interrogation. The IDF provided air cover for the ground forces during their withdrawal, reporting no Israeli casualties.

According to sources cited by the Arabic newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, the operation involved extensive surveillance, with an Israeli team operating in the area for several days prior. One vehicle, reportedly used for observation and later destroyed by Israeli airstrikes, may have been left in place up to two days before the raid, suggesting a meticulously planned, multi-stage operation rather than a sudden incursion.

During the raid on Al-Arabid's villa, which he was reportedly preparing for his son's wedding, an exchange of fire occurred. Sources claim Al-Arabid's two sons opened fire on the Israeli forces. His wife was killed, his sons and two guards were severely wounded, and Al-Arabid himself sustained injuries. Palestinian sources confirmed the death of his wife and injuries to family members, though details of the confrontation vary.

Following the capture, Israeli airstrikes reportedly covered the escape of the ground team, who utilized vehicles and motorcycles, including a route along the coast. Details of the exfiltration remain undisclosed by Israel, with much of the information originating from anonymous Gaza-based sources.

Israel views Al-Arabid's capture as a significant intelligence coup. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated Al-Arabid was involved in concealing and moving Israeli hostages, sheltering Hamas leaders, and rebuilding the organization's capabilities. Israeli officials believe he possesses crucial information about Hamas's internal structure, leadership, and operational mechanisms, particularly regarding security and the movement of high-ranking officials. Hamas sources, however, deny his direct involvement in holding hostages.

Al-Arabid, described as responsible for combating suspected Israeli collaborators and ISIS-linked groups within Gaza, had reportedly survived previous assassination attempts, including an explosion in June that left him lightly wounded. He was also present at Shifa Hospital during an Israeli operation in March 2024 but reportedly left before the facility was fully secured.
