Hamas Security Chief Captured Alive in Gaza Operation

Muein Mohammed al-Arabid, a senior Hamas official responsible for internal security and combating rival militias, was captured by Israeli forces in Gaza City on Tuesday. Israeli security services consider al-Arabid a high-value target, potentially holding significant information about Hamas's internal operations. The Shin Bet had tracked his location for weeks, initially considering an airstrike before opting for a ground operation to capture him alive.

Al-Arabid, a Hamas member since the 1990s, was recently involved in efforts to restore the organization's authority in Gaza and prevent its disarmament. His role included suppressing Palestinian groups coordinating with Israel and maintaining Hamas's monopoly on power. The operation, prepared over several months and directed by the Shin Bet, also involved Palestinian militia members, including those linked to the Abu Shabab group.

The forces located al-Arabid in a building in Gaza City's al-Katiba sector, where he was with his family. Exchanges of fire ensued, resulting in the deaths of four Palestinians, including al-Arabid's wife and son. Al-Arabid himself was wounded, captured, and subsequently transferred to Israel. He is currently hospitalized under surveillance, conscious, and able to communicate.

Israeli security officials believe al-Arabid was surprised by the capture and emphasize the importance of his interrogation for intelligence gathering and the symbolic impact of bringing a senior Hamas leader out of Gaza alive. The operation also serves as a message to Hamas leadership that Israel can reach them on the ground, even in areas they consider secure.
