IDF Forces Capture Senior Hamas Security Chief in Gaza

Israeli forces, including the Shin Bet and Air Force, successfully apprehended Muein al-Arabi, identified as the head of Hamas's internal security apparatus, near his home in Gaza City on Tuesday. Palestinian sources initially reported a complex operation involving a militia collaborating with Israel that encountered heavy resistance, necessitating an Israeli Air Force intervention to facilitate their withdrawal. These reports also indicated that al-Arabi's wife was killed during the incident, and three people were killed and eight injured at a local hospital.

Hamas initially offered a vague statement, blaming "Israeli aggression" for casualties and avoiding confirmation of the arrest. Later, a Hamas official confirmed to Al-Araby TV that Israel had "kidnapped a senior official from his residence," calling it a "clear and dangerous violation of the ceasefire agreement."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that al-Arabi is a high-ranking Hamas leader responsible for concealing and transporting hostages, as well as for Hamas's efforts to rebuild its capabilities and maintain control in Gaza. Netanyahu vowed that Israel would continue to pursue all those involved in the October 7th massacre.

The Shin Bet and IDF confirmed the operation, noting that al-Arabi was involved in strengthening Hamas's control and was transferred to Israel for further interrogation. Al-Arabi previously served as deputy head of the internal security mechanism and took over the leadership role after his predecessor was eliminated. His position involved counter-espionage, thwarting intelligence infiltration, and investigating collaborators, making his capture potentially significant for Israeli intelligence due to his comprehensive knowledge of Hamas's internal structure and clandestine operations.
