IDF Forces Capture Senior Hamas Security Chief in Gaza

Israeli forces, including the Shin Bet and Air Force, successfully apprehended Muein al-Arabi, identified as the head of Hamas's internal security apparatus, near his home in Gaza City on Tuesday. Palestinian sources initially reported a complex operation involving a militia collaborating with Israel that encountered heavy resistance, necessitating an Israeli Air Force intervention to cover their withdrawal. These reports also claimed the militia failed to capture their target, and that al-Arabi's wife was killed during the incident. Hamas initially offered a vague statement about "Israeli aggression" causing casualties, avoiding confirmation of the arrest.

Later, Hamas officially confirmed the capture, labeling it an "abduction" and a "clear and dangerous violation" of the ceasefire, urging international condemnation of Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that al-Arabi was a senior Hamas leader responsible for concealing and transporting hostages, hiding other Hamas officials, and rebuilding the terrorist organization's capabilities. Netanyahu added that al-Arabi was recently involved in efforts to restore Hamas's governance in Gaza, deceive regarding the Strip's disarmament, and aid in terror operations against Israelis.

The Shin Bet and IDF confirmed that al-Arabi was apprehended by Shin Bet forces at his home in northern Gaza and transferred to Israel for interrogation. They noted his recent activities in consolidating Hamas's control and stated he would be interrogated by Israeli security forces. Al-Arabi previously served as deputy head of the security mechanism and assumed leadership after his predecessor's elimination. His role involved counter-espionage, thwarting intelligence infiltration, and managing investigations within Hamas. His capture is considered significant due to his comprehensive knowledge of Hamas's internal structure, clandestine operations, and interrogation methods.
