Azealia Banks Questions Israeli Ministers' Actions in Social Media Post

Rapper Azealia Banks has publicly questioned the effectiveness of Israeli Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar and Communications Minister Shlomo Karai in a recent post on X, formerly Twitter. Banks, who has had a complex relationship with Israel, asked her followers if Zohar "actually does anything" as culture minister or if the role is "largely symbolic." She also inquired if Zohar and Karai are still approving "hasbara," a term referring to Israel's public diplomacy efforts, during the current period.

This critique comes as a surprise, given Banks' previously warm relationship with Zohar. In October 2025, ahead of a visit to Israel, she expressed a desire to meet him. Zohar welcomed her publicly, calling her a "true friend and great Zionist." Banks visited Israel that year to mark two years since the October 7th attacks, visiting sites like the Nova music festival, Yad Vashem, and the Dead Sea. During her concert in Tel Aviv, she wore an Israeli flag and a Star of David necklace. This visit followed her public declaration of being a "Zionist" and her support for Israel against boycott calls.

However, Banks' relationship with Israel has been marked by fluctuations. In 2018, after a performance, she vowed not to return due to alleged racist treatment and delays at Ben Gurion Airport. Seven years later, she reversed this stance, becoming a prominent supporter of Israel in the cultural sphere. Even during her 2025 visit, she caused controversy with anti-Ashkenazi Jewish remarks before reaffirming her support for Israel.

The exact motivation behind Banks' latest post remains unclear, as is the specific identity of "Shlomo" she mentioned, though Karai is presumed. The shift in her public stance towards Zohar, after a year of apparent support, suggests a change in their relationship.
