Hadash Party Faces Internal Crisis Over Knesset List Seat

The Democratic Front for Peace and Equality (Hadash) is experiencing significant internal turmoil regarding the second position on its Knesset list for the upcoming elections. The situation escalated with the withdrawal of lawyer Shadi Shuwayri, former head of the local council in Kfar Yasif, from the race. Shuwayri's decision follows that of political activist Jaafar Farah, director of the "Masaawa" center, who also withdrew from contention for the same seat.

Farah's withdrawal came after intensive internal meetings and discussions involving Hadash and Communist Party leadership, including figures like Muhammad Barakeh and Hanna Sweid, who sought to resolve the crisis. Shuwayri's subsequent withdrawal adds another layer of complexity, leaving Hadash leadership facing the challenge of selecting a candidate for the crucial second spot amidst ongoing internal debates about the selection process and the party's future political direction.

Farah's initial decision sparked protests within Hadash circles. In response, a tense demonstration took place in Shefa-Amr, coinciding with a meeting of Hadash cadres. Protesters demanded the reversal of Farah's withdrawal, emphasizing the public's right to choose their representatives. The protests and meetings occurred amid internal discussions about Farah's candidacy, which were intensified by allegations of harassment, with "Al-Sawar" and "Women Against Violence" associations reportedly possessing additional testimonies.

Hanna Sweid stated that Farah's withdrawal was coordinated with and approved by the party leadership, emphasizing his commitment to Hadash's institutions. Muhammad Barakeh addressed the protesters, acknowledging their concerns but urging calm and unity within the party, stressing that loud protests do not serve the cause. He reminded attendees of the broader political goal of opposing the right-wing government and strengthening the Arab public's political standing.

Following the withdrawals of Farah and Shuwayri, seven candidates are now competing for the second position on the Hadash list: Samir Abu Zeid, Basim Asfour, Mustafa Abu Raya, Nabil Al-Hallaj, Omar Waked Nassar, Nisreen Markus, and Marwan Mashraqi. The outcome of the internal election is highly anticipated as the party prepares for the upcoming Knesset elections.
