Tensions Flare at Democratic Front Elections in Shfaram; Candidate Withdraws

Elections for the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality's second seat in Shfaram were marred by significant tension and scuffles today. Supporters of candidate Jaafar Farrah, whose nomination was reportedly withdrawn yesterday by the Front, gathered outside the venue protesting the process. They chanted slogans like "What constitution gives you the right?" expressing anger over how the vacant second seat was being handled.

The situation escalated to physical altercations as individuals attempted to block other candidates from entering the meeting hall. Mohammad Barakeh was seen trying to de-escalate the volatile atmosphere and calm the protesters.

Amidst the crisis, candidate Shadi Shuwayri announced his withdrawal from the race for the second seat, citing his commitment to the unity of the party, the Front, and the Joint List. He explained that he had run in the May 2026 Front Council elections, where Jaafar Farrah secured the position to run by a narrow margin. Shuwayri stated that after the seat became vacant, he believed he was the rightful successor, having placed second in those council elections with approximately 49% of the vote.

Shuwayri further elaborated that the tense environment and accusations surrounding the crisis prompted his decision, framing it as a responsible move to preserve party unity. He pledged his support for whoever is ultimately chosen for the second seat and for the entire Joint List, urging an end to the dispute and a unified approach for the upcoming elections.

In a related incident, supporters of Jaafar Farrah chanted "Ophir Go Home" upon the arrival of Knesset Member Ophir Kiselev at the Shfaram election hall, reflecting the ongoing discontent.
