Israel Pursues Intelligence on 12 Missing Jews Murdered in Lebanon

Israel has made significant progress in negotiations with Lebanon concerning the fate of 12 prominent Jewish community members who were abducted and murdered in Lebanon during the 1980s. New intelligence and documentation have been presented to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, indicating potential locations of the victims' remains. This information was shared with Netanyahu during a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, Lisa Johnson, on Tuesday.

Gal Hirsch, Israel's coordinator for captives and missing persons, is leading the extensive efforts to locate the 12 missing individuals, under Netanyahu's directive. Since the war created an opening for negotiations, Hirsch has been actively engaging with Lebanese officials, providing them with intelligence, including diagrams and other data to aid in the search. These discussions have also taken place in Rome, where Hirsch met with Lebanese representatives.

Following these contacts, the Lebanese side has initiated search operations, though no remains have been found yet. Israel reports cooperation from Lebanese officials and continued efforts with American assistance. The issue is also formally included in negotiation clauses, with the U.S. ambassador's involvement, obligating the Lebanese government to search for the missing.

Hirsch is also maintaining contact with the families of the missing, who have lived with uncertainty for decades. Ambassador Johnson presented Netanyahu with video and photographic evidence confirming Lebanese actions in line with the agreements. These developments, coupled with the intelligence received, were among the factors influencing Netanyahu's decision to approve the release of five Lebanese citizens.

Simultaneously, efforts to recover missing persons continue, with the recent return of the body of Yehuda Katz and a commando operation four months ago to locate Ron Arad.
