Israel to Release Five Lebanese Detainees in Exchange for Remains of Jewish Leaders

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the release of five Lebanese citizens held by Israel, in a move linked to efforts to locate and repatriate the remains of Jewish community leaders murdered in Lebanon in the 1980s. The Prime Minister's Office announced Thursday that the decision was made as part of ongoing negotiations with Lebanon.

Netanyahu has been personally involved in the issue for decades, dating back to his tenure as Israel's UN ambassador. The announcement highlighted that significant efforts have been made in recent months by both Lebanon and Israel, including operations on the ground, to find the remains of the "martyred" Jewish leaders who were kidnapped and killed by terrorist organizations in the mid-1980s.

Following these "significant activities," Israel decided to release the five Lebanese nationals who were detained in areas controlled by the IDF in southern Lebanon. Investigations revealed that these individuals are civilians with no ties to terrorist organizations and no history of terrorist activity, making their continued detention unnecessary, according to the statement.
