Israel Pursues Return of Jewish Leaders' Bodies from Lebanon

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has directed relevant parties to utilize all available means to locate and repatriate the bodies of Jewish community leaders from Lebanon. These individuals, referred to as "martyrs of the nation," were abducted and brutally murdered by terrorist organizations in the mid-1980s. This issue has been a personal concern for Netanyahu for decades, dating back to his early public service as Israel's ambassador to the United Nations.

According to the Prime Minister's Office, extensive intelligence and operational efforts have been undertaken in recent months to find the burial sites. These operations, conducted both covertly and openly by Israeli security and intelligence forces and involving actions on the ground in Lebanon, aim to achieve a historic breakthrough and provide closure for the victims' families and the Jewish community.

In parallel with these efforts and in light of the progress made in negotiations on this sensitive humanitarian issue, a political decision has been made to release five Lebanese citizens. These individuals were previously detained by the IDF during operational activities in areas controlled by the Israel Defense Forces in southern Lebanon. The Prime Minister's Office emphasized that thorough investigations confirmed these individuals are civilians with no ties to any terrorist organization, who did not participate in hostile activities against Israel, and for whom no legal or security justification remains for continued detention.
