Israel Negotiates Lebanon Return of Beirut Jewish Victims' Bodies

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced Thursday that Israel is actively working to secure the return of the bodies of Lebanese Jews who were abducted and murdered approximately four decades ago. Netanyahu has been involved in this issue for decades, dating back to his tenure as Israel's ambassador to the United Nations.

In recent months, efforts to locate the burial sites of the victims have intensified. According to the Prime Minister's office, extensive actions have been undertaken by both Lebanon and Israel, including operations on the ground, as part of the endeavor to repatriate the bodies.

In parallel with these efforts, Israel decided to release five Lebanese civilians who had been detained in areas under IDF control in southern Lebanon. The Prime Minister's office emphasized that investigations confirmed these individuals were civilians not affiliated with any terrorist organization and had not engaged in terrorist activities, thus negating the need for their continued detention.

This initiative positions the case of the Lebanese Jews, who were kidnapped and killed in the 1980s, as a component of the ongoing negotiations with Lebanon, aiming to resolve one of the most painful unresolved issues dating back to that era.
