Basketball Association Denies Israeli Status to Three Foreign Players

The Israeli Basketball Association's special committee for naturalizing players has ruled that Will Rayman, Dusty Hannahs, and Brandon Bowman will not be recognized as Israeli players for the upcoming season. Consequently, they will be registered as naturalized players, meaning each team can only field one such player per game.

This decision significantly impacts team rosters. For instance, Maccabi Tel Aviv, which currently has Shane Hunter registered as a naturalized player, will have to choose between Hunter and Rayman for each game, as only one can be on the official game sheet. This limitation affects the strategic options available to coaches.

The criteria for being classified as a 'veteran naturalized player' or 'local player' include being born in Israel, playing two full seasons in an Israeli youth system, participating in Israeli national team campaigns or at least five official games, or playing three consecutive full seasons in the Israeli league.

Rayman arrived in Israel in the summer of 2021 and played for Hapoel Haifa for two years. He then joined Maccabi Tel Aviv but was loaned to France for his first season with the team. This loan period reset his consecutive seasons count in a top league, preventing him from meeting the criteria for 'veteran naturalized player' status. He will only be eligible for this status after completing the current season. The ruling means he and the other two players will not enjoy the rights afforded to Israeli players.
