Israeli Basketball Coaches Demand Suspension of Registration Changes by Basketball Association

Tensions have escalated between the Israeli Basketball Coaches Organization and the Basketball Association over new registration and certification rules for the 2026/27 season. Amir Cohen, legal advisor to the Coaches Organization, sent a formal letter to the Association's management demanding an immediate halt to the new directives, copying Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar and Roy Berkovich from the Sports Ministry.

The dispute centers on two major Association decisions: a sharp increase in late registration fines and certification renewal fees, which will rise from 90 to 200 shekels (over 120% increase) starting October 1, 2026, and the cancellation of mandatory continuing education hours for coaches. The Coaches Organization criticizes these changes as unilateral, lacking professional justification, and disregarding the significant investments coaches have made to meet previous requirements.

The letter stresses that the Basketball Association, as a public body, must uphold transparency and provide clear reasoning for such decisions. Cohen highlights that these substantial changes were implemented without consulting the coaches or their representatives. The Coaches Organization has given the Association a 14-day ultimatum to provide full meeting minutes where these decisions were made, a written explanation of the economic and professional rationale, and a formal mechanism for coaches to voice their opinions.

Failure to comply will be interpreted as proof that the decisions lack factual and legal basis, prompting the organization to pursue all available legal and regulatory remedies, including appeals to regulatory bodies, freedom of information requests, and legal action in appropriate courts. This conflict reflects growing friction ahead of the upcoming basketball season in Israel.
