Dov Bar-Klipa Appointed Central Command Chief Amidst Controversy

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has officially approved the appointment of Major General Dudo Bar-Klipa as the next commander of the IDF's Central Command. This decision follows a significant dispute between Gallant and IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi regarding the manner of Bar-Klipa's nomination, which was initially announced by Gallant during a broadcast, causing considerable controversy.

Despite the debate surrounding Gallant's method of promoting Bar-Klipa, the newly appointed commander is widely regarded as an offensive, determined, and respected officer. Bar-Klipa has a substantial background in combat and senior command roles, notably leading the "Ga'ash" (36) formation during operations in the Gaza Strip.

Bar-Klipa, born in 1976, enlisted in the Golani Brigade in 1995. His career progression includes commanding the "Shaked" battalion of the Givati Brigade (2008-2010), leading the Givati Brigade's training base (2010-2012), serving as liaison officer to the U.S. Marine Corps (2012-2014), commanding the Gaza Division's Southern Brigade (2014-2016), and commanding the Givati Brigade (2017-2019).

He further commanded "Sinai" formation and the "Alon" Command and Staff course (2019-2022), before leading the "Ga'ash" formation in central Gaza from 2022 to 2024. Since November 2024, he has served as the Head of the Manpower Directorate. Bar-Klipa holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Ono Academic College and a master's degree in political science from the University of Haifa, and is a graduate of the National Security College.
