IDF Announces Major Command Appointments, Including New Brigade Leaders

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) General Staff announced a series of significant command appointments on Monday, including new leaders for regular brigades and special units. Notably, Colonel Barak Bashan, who commanded the elite Shaldag unit, will move from the Air Force to the Ground Forces to become the next commander of the Givati Brigade. This move is particularly noteworthy as it involves a transition between different branches of the military.

Other key appointments include Colonel Ran Friedman as commander of the Paratroopers Brigade, Colonel Shimon Siso for the Commando Brigade, Colonel Eitan Gilad for the Nahal Brigade, and Colonel Nir Ifargan for the Kfir Brigade. In the Armored Corps, Colonel Yonatan Meir will command the 7th Brigade, Colonel Tal Alkovi the 188th Brigade, and Colonel Niv Dauba the 460th Brigade. Colonel Efrat Kikuv will command the 282nd Artillery Brigade.

In special naval units, Colonel 'Gimel' will command the Naval Commando Unit (Shayetet 13), Colonel 'Bet' will lead the Submarine Flotilla, and Colonel 'Vav' will command the Missile Ship Flotilla. All these appointments are pending approval from Defense Minister Israel Katz.

The appointment of Colonel Bashan to lead Givati comes at a sensitive time for the brigade, following an incident where several soldiers from the Rotem Battalion refused an order and did not report for operational activity in the Gaza Strip, leading to the cancellation of the mission. Following an investigation, disciplinary actions were taken, with five soldiers sentenced to ten days in military prison and eleven others to five days.

In parallel, Defense Minister Israel Katz approved the recommendation to appoint Major General Dudu Bar Kalippa as the next commander of the Central Command, expected to take office in 2027. Other senior staff appointments include Brigadier General 'Resh' as commander of the Special Operations Division in Military Intelligence, Brigadier General Haim Kaganazi as head of the Technology and Logistics Directorate's staff, and Colonel Yonatan Schneider as head of the Planning Directorate's "Tevel" department, with a promotion to Brigadier General.
