Defense Minister's Unilateral Appointment Announcement Sparks Controversy

Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on live television that he intends to appoint Major General Dudo Bar-Klipa as the next commander of the Central Command in 2027, succeeding Major General Avi Blout. The announcement, made on Channel 14 without prior consultation with the IDF Chief of Staff, violated standard procedures for appointing generals and drew significant criticism.

Katz praised Bar-Klipa, currently head of the Manpower Directorate and formerly commander of the 36th Armored Division during operations in Gaza, calling him a "hero and decisive generation" leader. When asked if he trusted Bar-Klipa to implement his policies, Katz affirmed his confidence.

Following Katz's statement, the IDF Spokesperson issued an unusual clarification stating that the Defense Minister's remarks were not coordinated with the Chief of Staff. The IDF affirmed its full confidence in Major General Blout, who is currently leading the Central Command under complex circumstances, and emphasized that the Chief of Staff has no intention of replacing key commanders during this sensitive period. Any future decisions regarding such replacements would follow established procedures.

The announcement also faced backlash from heads of local authorities in Judea and Samaria. The head of the Beit El council criticized Katz's public declaration as a "disgrace" and urged the Prime Minister to intervene. The head of the Gush Etzion Regional Council and the head of the Yesha Council expressed full support for Major General Blout, praising his leadership and contributions to counter-terrorism efforts and his cooperation with the settlement movement.
