Eyal Golasa Reflects on Missed Opportunities in Football Career

Former Israeli midfielder Eyal Golasa announced his retirement from professional football on Monday, citing physical limitations and his wife's wishes as key factors in his decision. In a farewell interview with Sport 5, Golasa, 33, expressed that while he enjoyed a "glorious career," he believes he could have achieved even more.

Golasa revealed that a significant missed opportunity was a formal offer from Bayern Munich during his time with Maccabi Haifa, which ultimately fell through. He also spoke about a near-transfer to Lazio that collapsed due to complications between the clubs, leaving him frustrated. "A club like Lazio should be able to sort things out with everyone," he stated.

Reflecting on his time with Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he spent eight years, Golasa explained his departure was due to a desire to manage his workload after several injuries, though he later realized he needed to re-evaluate his career path. He credited Jordi Cruyff for his move to Maccabi Tel Aviv from Maccabi Haifa, calling it a "very right step."

Golasa also touched upon his limited appearances for the Israeli national team, attributing them to recurring injuries that club teams feared would worsen. He identified the UEFA Champions League campaign with Maccabi Haifa, including matches against Aktobe, Bayern, and Juventus, as the highlight of his career. He also praised Dimitar Berbatov, his former PAOK Thessaloniki teammate, as the greatest player he ever played with, noting Berbatov "never lost a ball."

Looking ahead, Golasa plans to remain in football, holding a coaching license. While he could coach up to the National League, he is taking time to decide on his next move, emphasizing the need for 100% commitment. He also commented on the current Israeli football season, predicting an interesting year and highlighting the immense resources of Maccabi Tel Aviv and Maccabi Haifa.

Golasa expressed deep gratitude for the fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv, describing their support during his toughest moments, including injuries, as "crazy" and unforgettable.
