New Erez Crossing Magnetometer Criticized by Ofer Winter

Ofer Winter, leader of the new 'Am Israel' party, has strongly criticized a large magnetometer recently installed at the Erez border crossing between Israel and Gaza. Winter described the device, which was jointly inaugurated by Israel and Germany, as a "giant conceptual magnetometer."

In a video statement, Winter argued that the magnetometer symbolizes the Israeli government's failure to learn from the October 7th attacks. He expressed disbelief that such a facility would be established after three years of conflict in Gaza. Winter pointed out that the magnetometer, flying both Israeli and German flags, was inaugurated just last week, not in the aftermath of October 7th.

Winter contended that instead of defeating Hamas and encouraging the voluntary emigration of Gazans, the Israeli government, in cooperation with Germany, is inaugurating this "conceptual magnetometer." He believes that as long as Hamas holds out hope for Gaza's reconstruction, decisive victory and emigration will not occur.

The Erez crossing is the sole passage for people and goods in northern Gaza, utilizing advanced technological systems for security checks. The new, significantly larger magnetometer appears capable of inspecting not only individuals but also trucks, a departure from its previous use for personal checks.

This development comes after Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz stated last week that the Erez crossing would not be opened for goods. They emphasized that Israel has no intention of allowing Gaza's reconstruction until Hamas is disarmed and the territory is demilitarized.
