Iranian Agent Recruited Israeli Teens for Espionage, Police Say

Israeli police have uncovered a serious espionage ring in northern Israel involving minors from the Haifa area who were recruited by an Iranian intelligence agent. The agent allegedly used a sophisticated step-by-step method, starting with seemingly innocent tasks like distributing flyers, before escalating to security-related missions.

The investigation began with the arrest of a minor at Ben Gurion Airport upon his return to Israel, suspected of espionage and contact with a foreign agent. During interrogation, it was revealed that the initial contact occurred online when the suspect was seeking work. The Iranian agent then employed the 'step-by-step' technique, first demanding identification through photos and later assigning more significant security tasks.

The recruited minor then enlisted another minor, and together they carried out various missions for the Iranian agent. These included spraying provocative graffiti against the government and photographing strategic sites in central Israel. They reportedly received thousands of shekels for their services. The police have gathered substantial evidence and are preparing to file indictments against the minors.

This case is part of a pattern of espionage attempts by Iranian intelligence targeting Israeli citizens, particularly minors, by exploiting economic distress and job searches online. Security officials warn that Iranian intelligence is intensifying its recruitment efforts, using gradual methods that begin innocently and progress to serious security breaches, with payments often made through various means, including digital currencies.

Israeli police emphasized their commitment to combating such attempts and urged parents to be vigilant about their children's online activities and report any suspicious contact.
