IDF on High Alert for Multi-Front War During Holidays

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) remain on high alert for a multi-front escalation during the Jewish High Holidays, with a particular focus on a potential Iranian response to the destruction of an underground tunnel network in the Ali Taher ridge in southern Lebanon on Thursday. Tensions are high along the northern border, with residents, local authorities, and security forces maintaining heightened vigilance. The IDF is preparing for scenarios involving multiple fronts, extending from Syria to the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and even Yemen.

Troop levels in the IDF have increased by 300% compared to the period before October 7, 2023. In Gaza, forces are on alert for possible Hamas raids on IDF positions within the "Yellow Line" (a reference to the border). Tensions have risen following the elimination of Hamas's Khan Younis brigade commander and a sniper cell leader in Rafah as part of ongoing targeted killings by the IDF and Shin Bet.

In the West Bank, forces are vigilant against potential Palestinian terrorist attacks and attacks by Jewish extremists. A surprise drill involving all forces in the sector was conducted on Friday. The IDF announced that the Central Command completed a series of drills, call-ups, and inspections to boost readiness for Rosh Hashanah in the Judea and Samaria division. This included dozens of exercises, readiness reviews, and increased counter-terrorism operations, leading to the arrest of over 220 wanted individuals.

The recent operation in Ali Taher, described by senior officers as one of the most complex of the war, lasted about four months and involved deceiving Hezbollah, prolonged fighting against dozens of terrorists entrenched underground, and efforts to prevent a direct, large-scale confrontation with Iran. The IDF is now redeploying in the Beaufort area to prevent Hezbollah from breaching the Yellow Line.

Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi visited the southern Lebanon front on Saturday, emphasizing that Hezbollah is fighting on behalf of Iran and that any village used for terror infrastructure endangers itself. He stated, "We will not allow Hezbollah to restore its capabilities and re-establish itself in the area. The Yellow Line remains under our full control and unchanged." Halevi also criticized the Lebanese army's conduct, asserting that Israel will defend its northern communities at all costs and that any harm to them or IDF forces will be met with an immediate and powerful response. He added that the Lebanese army must demonstrate effectiveness on the ground, or progress on the agreement between Israel and Lebanon will be hindered.
