Greek Police Arrest Taxi Driver for Overcharging and Threatening Israeli Tourists in Athens

A 38-year-old taxi driver in Athens was arrested on August 25 on suspicion of robbery after demanding 600 euros from an Israeli family for a ride from Athens International Airport to a city center hotel, far exceeding the legal fare of about 55 euros. The incident occurred on the night of August 13 when the driver allegedly threatened the family with violence and prevented them from leaving the taxi or retrieving their luggage until they paid the inflated fare. The family immediately filed a complaint with the Syntagma police department, prompting an investigation that used digital evidence to identify and locate the driver. Greek police are also investigating a separate complaint from another tourist who claims the same driver tried to charge 800 euros for a ride. The case remains under investigation with the Athens prosecutor's office involved, and the driver is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
