Tel Aviv has enhanced the Peace Bridge with new shade structures to improve comfort for pedestrians and public transit users amid hot weather. City officials and transport advocates emphasize the importance of shading in urban planning, noting ongoing efforts to plant trees and develop innovative shading solutions. Despite progress, Israeli cities still prioritize cars over pedestrians, requiring further vision and investment to create more walkable, shaded urban spaces.

  • Tel Aviv installed new pergolas on Peace Bridge to provide shade for pedestrians and transit users.
  • The city plants 10,000 trees annually and develops smart shading systems combining fabric and solar panels.
  • Shading improves public transport appeal by protecting users from harsh weather, says transport advocate.
  • Tel Aviv leveraged light rail construction to redesign streets with integrated shading and pedestrian-friendly features.
  • Israeli urban planning still favors cars, with wider streets and less natural shading compared to Europe.
  • City officials urge broader visionary urban planning to enhance pedestrian comfort and climate resilience.

Last week, the Tel Aviv municipality announced an upgrade to the Peace Bridge, including the installation of new pergolas that provide shade along the bridge. While this may seem cosmetic, it significantly improves the experience for public transport users and pedestrians, especially during the hot summer months. Sivan Shmuelovitz, CEO of the 15 Minutes organization advocating for accessible and green public transportation, highlighted the importance of such improvements at one of the country's busiest intersections and train stations. She emphasized that unlike private car users who can park near their homes, pedestrians and public transit users are exposed to weather conditions, which influences their choice to use public transport.

Despite the progress, Shmuelovitz noted that Israeli cities remain largely unprepared for pedestrian needs, being designed primarily for private vehicles. Tel Aviv’s Deputy Mayor and Transportation Portfolio Holder, Meital Lahav, explained that the city has recognized the need for widespread shading and has planted 10,000 trees annually, focusing on broad habitats and irrigation systems to support healthy growth. She also mentioned ongoing experimental shading projects that ensure driver visibility is not compromised.

Tel Aviv’s open innovation lab, CityZone, developed a smart shading system combining fabric shades with flexible solar panels. The city also installs temporary shades in summer and preserves mature trees. Lahav pointed out that shading investments are relatively affordable but require sidewalk expansion and underground infrastructure adjustments. The extensive construction work for the light rail in Tel Aviv provided an opportunity to redesign streets and integrate shading solutions, creating a new urban environment.

Shmuelovitz stressed that while trees are the ultimate shading solution, they take time to mature, so artificial shading must also be implemented. She contrasted Israeli urban planning with European cities, where buildings provide shade on streets, noting that Israeli streets are wider and designed for cars. She called for city leaders to adopt a visionary approach to urban projects, integrating shading and pedestrian comfort into broader city planning. The article concludes that although progress is underway, significant work remains to make Israeli cities more pedestrian-friendly and climate-resilient.
