IDF to Replace Closed Meal Boxes with Fresh Kosher Meals for Haredi Soldiers

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is set to implement a significant change in the provision of Mehadrin kosher food for Haredi soldiers within the next two weeks. The current system, which relies primarily on closed meal boxes (chamgashiyot), will be gradually phased out and replaced by fresh, varied meals that meet Mehadrin kosher standards. These meals will be integrated into the regular food supply system at military bases, ensuring compliance with strict kosher requirements and accommodating the lifestyle of Haredi soldiers.

To oversee this transition, a new division has been established within the Military Rabbinate's Kashrut branch. This division will be responsible for setting policies and supervising the kosher food provided to Mehadrin consumers in the army, establishing dedicated standards for base kitchens to guarantee adherence to kosher laws.

This initiative was developed through a collaborative effort involving the IDF Chief of Staff’s advisor on Haredi affairs, the Technology and Logistics Directorate, and the Military Rabbinate. The review process included gathering feedback from soldiers and commanders to identify gaps and tailor the food supply system to better meet the needs of Haredi soldiers.

Brigadier General Avinoam Emuna, the Chief of Staff’s advisor on Haredi affairs, emphasized the army’s commitment not only to enabling Haredi soldiers to serve while maintaining their lifestyle but also to ensuring they receive respectful and sustainable service conditions. The rollout of this new food system will occur gradually over the coming weeks and is part of broader IDF efforts to adapt service conditions for Haredi soldiers.
