IDF Introduces Fresh Kosher Meals to Ease Service for Haredi Soldiers

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is implementing a new system to better accommodate Haredi soldiers requiring Mehadrin kosher meals. Previously, these soldiers received frozen, reheated meals in sealed trays, but the IDF's Logistics and Technology Directorate, along with the supply center, has developed a plan to provide fresh, varied kosher meals as part of the regular food service at bases. This change aims to respect the strict dietary standards of the Haredi community while improving meal quality and variety.

The initiative is coordinated with the Mehadrin and Special Populations Unit, a new division within the Military Rabbinate's kashrut branch, which oversees religious standards and supervises procurement and kitchen operations to ensure uncompromising kosher compliance. The plan was formulated after joint staff work involving the IDF's advisor for Haredi affairs, the Logistics Directorate, and the Military Rabbinate, addressing gaps identified by soldiers and commanders.

Brigadier General Avinoam Emuna, the IDF's advisor on Haredi matters, emphasized the army's commitment to enabling Haredi soldiers to serve while maintaining their lifestyle with dignity and sustainability. This development coincides with a significant rise in Haredi enlistment: in the 2025 recruitment year, 4,298 Haredi soldiers joined the IDF, marking a 53% increase from 2,811 the previous year, according to recent data presented to the High Court of Justice.
