IDF Ends Frozen Meals for Haredi Soldiers, Introduces Fresh Mehadrin-Certified Food
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is set to overhaul its food system for Haredi and religious soldiers by phasing out frozen pre-packaged meals and replacing them with fresh, diverse meals certified under Mehadrin kosher standards. Until now, soldiers who required Mehadrin certification received frozen meals that were heated before serving, which limited variety and differed from the food provided to other soldiers.
The new plan, developed by the IDF's Logistics and Technology Directorate in coordination with the Military Rabbinate and the Chief of Staff's advisor on Haredi affairs, aims to integrate fresh Mehadrin meals into the regular food supply at bases. This initiative seeks to improve quality while fully respecting kosher requirements and the lifestyle of Haredi soldiers.
To implement the program, a new division within the Military Rabbinate's kosher department has been established to oversee Mehadrin certification, special population needs, infrastructure adaptation, and food procurement processes. Dedicated operational protocols for base kitchens will also be introduced to maintain high kosher standards.
The reform follows consultations with soldiers and commanders who highlighted shortcomings in the frozen meal system. Brigadier General Avinoam Emuna, the Chief of Staff's advisor on Haredi affairs, emphasized that integrating Haredi soldiers into the IDF involves more than just allowing enlistment; it requires providing respectful conditions that enable optimal and sustained service.
